As someone with severe chemical sensitivity, having a non-toxic lifestyle is a non-negotiable for me. Swapping out my toxic products for clean ones has been just as important for my healing as changing my diet. In fact, environmental toxins can be a root cause to having a thyroid imbalance in the first place. There are many products out there that are toxic for your thyroid. For example, the fluoride in toothpaste and traditional floss can be harmful.
The truth is, not only is our environment filled with toxins, but most of the products on the market today are as well. They can mess with our hormones, endocrine system, and much more. There is a ton of what is called “green washing” out there. This means that companies are master marketers at labeling their products with labels like “gluten free,” “vegan,” and “eco-friendly.” All of this means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING as far as your health is concerned and many of these products contain chemicals that can be harmful. As consumers, it is essential that we educate ourselves so we don’t fall for this trap.
Personally, I use The Environmental Working Group. This website/app is great for checking your products to see on a scale from 1-10 where they fall in terms of toxicity. It also has a scale where they fall under the categories ” Allergy Concern,” “Cancer Concern,” and “Developmental Concern.”
