Unlocking Hashimotos Anxiety and stress: Mental/Emotional Remedies for the Four “F’s” of the nervous system

Hashimotos stress and anxiety can often stem from a dysregulated nervous system and not feeling safe in the body. Due to stored memories, emotions, belief systems, and trauma trapped in the physical body, we can often become subconsciously addicted to our own stress hormones.

This cycle of stress increases and decreases cortisol (your stress hormone) and can creates ongoing cycles of anxiety, stress, and other mood challenges.

Here are some signs that your nervous system is dysregulated:

  • Feeling anxious or on edge

  • Feeling exhausted but unable to relax

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Headaches or pain

  • Spaced out, numb or on auto pilot

  • Difficulty with attention or concentration

  • Cravings or extreme appetite changes

  • Skin and digestive issues

If you have any or all of these, you’re not alone. It’s very common for those with Hashimotos (myself included) to experience many of these.

One of the many things that has helped me with my own nervous system and with my clients is taking homeopathic mental/emotional remedies.

Our nervous system goes through cycles of flight, fight, fawn, and freeze as a protection mechanism to keep us safe. It’s common for your nervous system to ebb and flow through all four cycles depending on the day and circumstances.

Using mental/emotional remedies is one helpful tool that can help your nervous system throughout these stages and can be a great addition to any other nervous system support you currently have.

“F” #1: Signs and symptoms of Flight

  • Feeling anxious

  • Can’t sit still and relax

  • Perfectionism

  • Overachiever

  • Workaholic

  • Fearful/obsessive thoughts

  • Panic/worry

  • OCD

AnXious is for the temporary relief of the symptoms related to stress including anxiety, worry, fear, and feeling of being overwhelmed.

Recommend remedies for flight:

I personally alternate using these, but find myself using Anxious and Focus (10-30 drops) in my water every day. It helps calm my nervous system and allows me to concentrate easily throughout my work day.

PTS Stress Remedy can also be helpful for larger traumatic events like a divorce, death of a loved one, or any other really challenging difficult life circumstances.

I love using Control when I notice my perfectionism starts to take over. I also recommend this for clients where they feel their circumstances are out of their control — like after a mold exposure or conflict in a relationship or work environment.

“F” #2: Signs and symptoms of Fight

  • Anger outbursts

  • Irritability

  • Defensiveness

  • Controlling others

  • Explosive behavior

Rage is for the temporary relief of symptoms such as maliciousness, quarrelsomeness, hatred, sudden rage and impulsivity.

Recommend remedies for Fight:

Rage is one of my personal favorites to use when my PMS and irritability are in full force. It can also be great to use when you feel you’re going through a difficult circumstance like a divorce, relationship issue, or conflict at work.

“F” #3: Signs and symptoms of Fawn:

  • Difficulty setting boundaries

  • Highly aware of other people’s emotions and needs and often betrays their own

  • Difficulty saying no

  • Conflict avoidant

  • People pleasing/caretaking and codependency

Esteem is for the temporary relief of the symptoms related to lack of self-esteem including codependency, lack of self-confidence and narcissism.

Recommend remedies for Fawn:

Esteem has helped me tremendously in speaking up, setting boundaries, and feeling more confident. I often also recommend this remedy to clients who struggle with body image challenges.

“F” #4: Signs and symptoms of Freeze:

  • Feeling stuck

  • Difficulty making decisions

  • Perfectionism

  • Procrastination

  • Isolation

  • Numb

  • Inability to speak

  • Dread/defeat- what's the point?

Motivation is for the temporary relief of symptoms related to a lack of motivation, such as boredom, loathing of work, aversion to mental work, loss of ambition, mental fatigue, lack of self-confidence, hopelessness, and lack of passion for things.

Recommend remedies for Freeze:

Motivation is one of my absolute favorite remedies. I personally use motivation daily to help get me out of procrastination and perfectionism cycles. I notice when I take it I’m able to get things done without overthinking and overanalyzing. This a a great remedy for just about everyone.

Elevate is also one of my absolute favorite remedies. I also use elevate daily and I notice I feel happier and more optimistic in my outlook on things. I love using this remedy for clients who are typically struggling with feelings of depression or find themselves feeling hopeless about their symptoms or diagnosis.

Energize is a great staple remedy for thyroid health and I notice an increase of energy when I take it in the morning. It really perks me up especially on those difficult days when I feel like I’m in a slump.

Grief is a great remedy if you’ve had a loved one pass away or are going through a divorce or breakup of any kind.

All in all, homeopathic mental/emotional remedies can be a helpful tool in temporarily relieving symptoms of nervous system dysregulation.

Recommended dosing for these remedies for adults is 10 drops 3x/day or 30 drops under the tongue or in water. I recommend starting with one remedy to see how your body responds. I personally notice a shift in my nervous system within 10 minutes of taking the remedies.
